Even an ordinary 35mm camera can make a surprisingly loud sound
when the shutter is released in a quiet room with good acoustics such
as you find in many churches.
I was engaged to take some pictures during the wedding of our church
organist in Frankfurt/Main, Germany. I should hasten to add that I am
not a professional photographer, but the couple wanted me to take the
pictures anyway.
I repeatedly asked them about clearance with the clergy in charge,
and they assured me that non-flash pictures during the liturgy was
fine.
I sat unobtrusively at the back of the church and began taking a few
pictures of the couple at the altar. The shutter was audible, but there
were no flashes.
Five minutes into the service the clergyman presider turned to face
the congregation and announced, "There will be no more pictures."
If there had been a hole in the floor, I would have dived in!
David Strang.
