I didn't get any response on the Anglican Music List to this query, so
maybe
someone here knows the details/answers.

Subj: Commonwealth Day.
I came upon some pictures of a service at Westminster Abbey in
London which were labeled "Commonwealth Day". I had not before heard
of this observance, but what puzzled me was the elaborately decorated
definitely blue vestments worn by the Abbey staff (mostly copes).
Why this color?
>From Wikipedia:
<<<Commonwealth Day is the annual celebration of the _Commonwealth of
Nations_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Nations) held on the
second Monday in March, and marked by a multi-faith service in _Westminster
Abbey_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westminster_Abbey) , normally attended
by Queen _Elizabeth II_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_II) as
_Head of the Commonwealth_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_of_the_Commonwealth) , with the Commonwealth Secretary-General and Commonwealth _High
Commissioners_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Commissioner) in London. The
Queen delivers an address to the Commonwealth, broadcast throughout the
world. >>>>
