When we went up to the UP in my early years, the weather was dismally
drizzly, gray, and cold, so Mom and Dad opted not to have us visit
Mackinac Island (I still haven't been there) and we had a depressing
lunch or ice cream or something in St. Ignace. We might have stayed
overnight there, too. Can't remember.

Later, around 2000, I went with our choirmaster and some men from the
choir to his summer home near Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, so we zipped
across the east end of the UP to get up there.

That's the sum total of my experience of the UP. Thick pine forests
along the way.
