No, everything to do with USCIS is costly and slow. And with the
post-9/11 "REAL ID" paranoia, everybody has to be able to talk to
everybody else so that one is known to be legally present in the
country.

I have my suspicions that, at some point (or points) in this process, I
will be writing to sympathetic elected representatives and noting the
deficiencies I end up experiencing with the current system. (Not because
I expect I will need advocacy with my case, but more along the "the
current rules do not make sense; you should help put sensible rules into
place" lines.)

But yes, the circuit court was the right first step in the process: I
just didn't realize that the green card had to be the next step, and
that pretty much everything else would be on hold until that step is
complete. So it's sort of like reaching a plateau, only to realize that
it's not the top: there's still more hill to climb.

I honestly couldn't remember if I had shared here or not; between the
cat and the name change, my memories of that week are a bit of a blur!
