Of course, Scott. Oscar Mayer had a processing plant in Madison which
employed at least that many people. That's a whole lotta folks to suddenly
be jobless. It compares to the closing, also rather sudden, of Gisholt
Machine Co., which happened IIRC in 1971 and threw a large number of folks
out of work.
