Though the reasons are somewhat different, the local RC diocese
has closed a large percentage of parishes in this Diocese. This
includes Luzerne County (county seat: Wilkes-Barre), which
is actually the diocesan center for the RC population. In Luzerne County
alone, fully one half of the parish churches, heavily ethnic congregations,
have been closed, and the congregations yoked into remaining more
general churches.

However, a prime deciding factor in deciding which churches remain
open and which are closed is the state of the physical church buildings.
Sadly, some of the most beautiful church buildings need millions of
dollars of repairs, and the local Diocese can't afford them.

Then you have the oddity of some suburban areas where new and
larger churches are needed. A case in point is the next town up the
road, Mountain Top, PA which is in the midst of raising funds for
a completely new church (mega-millions of dollars) for it's 4,000
families.

Would that one of the closed church treasures could somehow be
moved up the mountain to Mountain Top!
