Just saw a HUGE red-tailed hawk land on the edge of one of our flowerbeds
near the house. He (we presume it was a he) then took off into a nearby
tree with something in his beak, and from there we could see he'd caught a
small snake, probably one of our garter snakes. He adjusted things and then
flew off. It was breathtaking to see one so close! I do wish he'd caught
one of the many pestiferous rodents instead of a beneficial small snake,
but I suppose they must vary their diet just as we do, as well as eat
what's handy.
