The opening session of the biennial American Guild of Organists
some years ago in Minneapolis was held in the mammoth Central
Lutheran Church at the edge of downtown. The late McNeil Robinson,
a well known improviser on the organ, was playing the 110 rank
Casavant pipe organ. It was obvious from the first hymn that the
large massed choir on risers behind the altar had never experienced
such liberties with hymn accompaniment. Frankly, it looked like they
thought he was daft from their facial expressions.

Luckily his eccentricities were taken in stride by the organist delegates
who sang through it all with great vigor.
