Can't be sure as I'm relying on ancient memory, but Cygnus is quite large , whereas the Southern Cross is much smaller. The SC's longer axis is smaller than Orion's Belt. Brian is right- you can't miss it, because it is in a dark area of the sky. The Aus flag can be misleading- the axes are not quite at right angles nor is the short part placed symmetrically. Don't forget that the 7-pointed star on the flag is not part of the constellation, it is a representation of the States ofthe Commonwealth of Australia. Hope this help

I'm doing some research for a stole and wonder if anyone knows how the
'size' of the constellation 'Southern Cross' compares to the image often
called Northern Cross (which is inside of the constellation that is a goose,
