When I was in high school, the musical was an every-other-year event, with
a "pops concert" filling the slot in alternate years. Up until my senior
year, the musicals had been of the "classical" type, many of which the
royalty fees had long since disappeared from...Gilbert and Sullivan or
Victor Herbert or Sigmund Romberg operettas, mostly. In my sophomore year,
for example, we did "The Mikado" (boy, that would not go over today!). But
in my senior year the choir director decided to do "Oklahoma!" and we were
delighted. Ever since then it's been the modern musical at that school, and
I think the "pops concert" has disappeared entirely and the musical has
become a yearly endeavor.
