The end did come early this morning for her. She's had a long life. And
I know Heather finds solace in Majesty reuniting with her former owner,
and I remember the days when she would prowl the neighborhood back when
I first met her and imagine her exploring her new surroundings with
renewed vitality.
I also feel blessed. Maj was always "Heather's cat," and I was rarely
her preferred human. (Our younger cat, Esther, has always preferred me
to Heather, so it kind of worked out.) But in the last couple of days,
Maj spent many hours draped across my lap. Last night, she was sitting
with Heather on the love seat, and she heard the sound of a Facebook
game I was playing, and she moved (as quickly as she was able, with her
hind legs giving her trouble) to join me in the chair. And she spent her
final night in our bed, against my legs.
I am thankful that, at least for now, relief is the predominant emotion.
Being the stay-at-home spouse, I found the past two days a bit
difficult, with her constant desire for my attention. I am also relieved
that it happened in such a way that she didn't seem to be in any
distress or pain, and that we had a sense for a couple of days that it
might happen: long enough to be somewhat prepared for her death, but not
so long that she felt like a burden.
