Back around 1943 when I was 12, my mother would give me a nickel for lunch. For that, I got a quarter pound of baloney, two slices of bread, and a penny grab bag of candy from the corner shop by the school. No coca cola.
I don't think she'd ever heard the word nutrition in any of the languages she knew (more or less), English, French, Swedish, or Finnish.
