My best friend, many long years ago, was unmarried at one point, but did
have irregular periods. She was RC. Her doctor prescribed The Pill for
her, to regularize her periods, which was a great relief to her and her
boyfriend. When she did get married, she wanted children, as many as
possible as soon as possible, and her husband was okay with that, so she
dropped the Pills. That probably wouldn't have worked for your mother,
though, since usually periods that are irregular in adolescence
regularize as soon as they start again after a first baby.

I'm not sure about RCC rulings, though... I remember long after that,
after AIDS developed, nuns in Africa were passing out condoms in order
for traveling husbands to not bring it home to their wives, and Rome put
a stop to that when they heard about it. Condoms weren't permissible
even to prevent disease, and irregular periods are pretty trivial when
compared to AIDS...
