[Magdalen] Death in the city

I don't officially telecommute anymore, as our CEO has called everyone
back to the office. So my office is downtown (in a nice location, but
still requires a commute). I do telecommute often when there are
early-morning conference calls or we're on a deadline and the days are
long (like the past two weeks).
We've considered moving to the western suburbs (Elgin/Algonquin area)
but haven't made any progress toward doing so. I've used Trulia.com to
explore housing in other markets like Omaha, Milwaukee, the Detroit
suburbs back home. Houston would be surprisingly affordable in
comparison.
It would help to live in a municipality that isn't in a panic over
long-underfunded pension plans. So now the property taxes have soared
and they're considering taxing water and sewer usage to be able to pay
the pension plans.
Just a little down over how things are going in this city. On the
other hand, Taco Bell within walking distance! That's a plus in my
book.
