That's where the cranberry bogs are now, David. I remember as a child
hearing the forecasts for the cranberry bogs on the morning weather report
on WHA radio. (No TV back then in our house)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
While there may be cranberry farms in the far eastern counties of
Wisconsin - the State that produces most of the USA cranberries -
the really major cranberry farms are in Central Wisconsin.
Just google Central Wisconsin cranberry bogs. I would hazard
a guess that most of the areas burnt over by the fire in 1871 are
timbered over with second growth forests.
Eastern Wisconsin, hugging Lake Michigan is in the natural range
of the American Beech (Fagus americana). They are a climax
species, so they probably are just beginning to make a comeback in
the Fire area. I drove across Wisconsin #29 twice to dig up
saplings to plant on my Eau Claire property, but the spot I chose
for digging the saplings was far south of the Peshtigo Fire area. Someone
shot at me on the second trip, even though I was on the highway
right-of-way! Those are tough people.
