My daily Tagesschau viewing (via tagesschau.de) ends with the
Wettervorhersage for the next day. It's mainly a map of Germany
showing expected conditions and temperatures for the next three days,
with the voice of a meteorologist in Frankfurt briefly explaining it.
No need for someone standing in front of the map and pointing out
things for us and adding his or her personality...but I know over
here, such things are critical in achieving ratings. Amazing how many
viewers tune in based on factors like a "hot" meteorologist or to see
if the weather guy gets the giggles.
I've noticed that Tagesschau (only 15 minutes at 8 p.m. daily...1 p.m.
for me) packs a great deal of news into those 15 minutes thusly: zero
banter (so no time wasted saying, "Thanks, Jim, for that report!"),
and nobody says his or her own name (these are given on the screen);
the main presenter gets a break at some point when they show a video
story with a hidden presenter voicing over it. And of course no
commercials. Having the presenter always start and end the show with a
standard greeting also removes an element of personality. But plenty
of personality comes through, IMO, in the very attractiveness of the
presenters (of both sexes and a range of ages), their crisp stylish
clothing, and their smooth, swift speech.
But I've digressed, majorly.

"Lord!" says I to myself, "I forget how BIG we are over here. Over there, basically one weather report covers an entire nation!" I hyperbolise, but you get my point.
