In my experience, TRES-pass-es and TRES-pass are lost causes in
the USA.  It's all tres-PASS-es and tres-PASS.
 
Putting the stress on the wrong syllable also changes the vowel
in the "pass" syllable from a short "a" to the "a" as in "cat."
 
Can we ever head 'em off at the pass?
