I won the prize for the best first year student in Spanish at UW-Madison.
It was all Castilion, of course since Latin American Spanish was looked
down upon. The awards ceremony at the end of the term were all in
Spanish, and I was presented with two small Goya etchings. It goes to
show how classy things were back in he 1950's. In any case, I remember
pretty well understanding the whole awards ceremony. Indeed, what a
year in Spain would have done, but it was not to be for a pre-medical
student.

To show the genetic competition that existed for my younger brother,
Paul, (but not vise-versa), he won the same prize 4 years later and
got 2 Goya etchings as well.

I now live with a person whose native language is Spanish, but I really
speak only words and phrases here and there......and not in Castilion.
