>From 1982 through 2012 I helped welcome and orient new house officers
(medical
residents). They were always in their mid-twenties. I, however, went from
my
thirties to my forties to my fifties to my sixties.
They were so fresh and eager, some were terribly anxi*o*us, all tried their
best
to hide their anxiety. Six months later they all looked like the walking
dead.
In 1982, it was unusual to see a house officer who wasn't a white boy. By
1995
that was all changed. The field of medicine evolving from within.
I've probably told you this story. In 1985 the hospital had
across-the-board layoffs.
All the IV nurses were let go, (The jolly band of MBAs running the layoffs
said the
residents could handle this.) The poor kids failed miserably (O the
stories!) and the
IV nurses were all back in eight weeks.
