think it's
up to me when to do it (and some subdeacons never do, which is fine),
but I figure if we had a solemn procession, we need the fancy Epistle
tone. I think it almost upstages the Gospel tone.>>>>>>

During the twenty years I lived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, I acted as
subdeacon for the monthly Minnesota CBS (Confraternity of the Blessed
Sacrament) Solemn Masses. I always used the Solemn Epistle Tone
for these events. A bishop once noted the persons gushing over my
"performance" at the following reception, and accused me of having a
professional "clack."

At the least, the Solemn Epistle tone is festive, and much fun to chant.

If the chant ends up "upstaging" the clergyperson chanting the Gospel,
well, that's the way it goes.
