It was really nice when the President applauded her for being out when it
was a bit of a risk.

Ellen obviously a bit overwhelmed by this deflected by adding quietly:

"Uh, I'm not really gay..." Hilarious roar from the crowd.

Then, showing he has also got a sense of timing, the President added:

"But you played one on television."  (more laughs)

Yes, we could use more nice people.
