I dated a guy from Santa Barbara who lived smack across from the
famous Santa Barbara Mission. I should write a book.
Anyway ---
The Ozzies call them "gums." They are native there and there are quite
a few species.
It's a bad name to use in North America, because we have unrelated
species:
(1) Sweet Gum (Liquidambar styraciflua)
(2) Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica).
David Strang.
