The Ozzies call them "gums."  They are native there and there are  quite
a few species.
 
It's a bad name to use in North America, because we have unrelated
species:
 
(1) Sweet Gum (Liquidambar styraciflua)
 
(2) Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica).
