My latest issue of the USA periodical, "Huguenot Heritage" arrived
this week, and has some interesting material, including a book on the
history of Huguenots in North America.
There have been some16 or so generations since my paternal
ancestors arrived at New Rochelle, NY in 1688, and there is now only
<5% personal French DNA, but I'm still interested in the Huguenots.
In the book review:
(1) It was routine for Huguenot immigrants to North America to
have a way station for a couple of years in Britain (mine did).
(2) Huguenot settlers tried to establish communities in Florida in
the late 1500's, but ran afoul of the Spanish who sent troops to
the area for the first time to quell this incursion, then gave the
captive Frenchmen a choice between Roman Catholic conversion
(the Huguenots were Reformed :Protestants) or death. They all
refused and were massacred on the spot. Saint Augustine was
founded as a result of these events.
(3) Bowdoin College and Gallaudet College were named after Huguenot
families.
(4) Three quarters of Huguenot immigrants became Anglicans.
