...kind of interesting to ponder such architecture to honor the centuries old religious traditions of ascetic desert-dwellers...

I have an episcopalian priest friend, formerly a Benedictine (TEC priest now probably 25+ years) who described his life in the monastery of individual daily mass, said by each member of the community at "their own" small side altars which lined both sides of the nave -10 on each side. Also something difficult to imagine even in the '50s.

There was a special mailing containing up to date photos of the
current and ongoing construction of Clear Creek Abbey in Eastern
Oklahoma. This is in the Benedictine Solesmes and Fontgambault
Tradition, and because of the Romanesque architecture, it's a bit
like watching a medieval building under construction (though, of course
with modern equipment).

The current emphasis is the Rounded apse with several radiating
chapels, and the adjoining sanctuary is being opened up to its full
height. The Abbey promises to be one heck of a spot for the
full Tridentine Mass and Offices, which is all they do at Clear Creek.

Just google Clear Creek Monastery, and click on construction photos.
Since these pictures are largely taken from the air, it shows how
beautiful the location in Eastern Oklahoma. No "winds sweeping
down the plains" there.

I have visited the tombs of Saint Benedict and his sister, Saint
Scholastica,
at Saint Benoit sur Loire (Fleury). They are interred beneath the high
altar of that grand old French medieval Abbey after having been removed
from
their original location in tialy's Monte Cassino "for safe keeping."
