Subj: Whither to lie and to lay?

Has the difference between the verbs to lie and to lay gone the way of
who/whom? There seems to be no problem for English speakers to
comprehend the relative pronoun, who, exclusively used, but is it the same
situation with lie/lay?

My observation is that lie/lay are now confused by English speakers,
writers,
including the media. I should hasten to qualify this statement by
stressing
that I am referring entirely to North American English. I'm not qualified
to
assess this situation in the UK and their former colonies.

It's interesting to reflect that my parents (a farm boy from Minnesota and
a daughter of Norwegian immigrants) never misused who/whom and never
confused to lie and to lay. The result of that is that I do not misuse
them
either.
