As Jay has noted, it's largely popular as it's the end point of a popular 
pilgrimage trek across northern Spain, taken (as she notes) by many people 
who aren't all that religious. I have a friend who did it a few years ago - 
and he's Jewish. The Cursillo movement started on this pilgrimage back in
