>>>Have you taught Ev to do his taxes, manage a bank account, drive, keep a
budget, fill out a job app, stay out of trouble, and treat other people
well and fairly? If so, your job is pretty much accomplished. That is what
we all need to do for our kids by the time they get out of high school. (My
parents neglected the parts about driving and taxes, but did well with the
others.)<<<

I was basically taught nothing (though expected to know all), but when I got to college I learned the value of basic friendships when it came to learning how to "be an adult". For instance, I learned how to balance my checkbook not by painstakingly reading the instructions (which would of course have done the job), but by having a fellow student, who happened to be a former banker, sit down with me and walk me through said instructions. I was instantly a checkbook-balancing wiz.

Because of the life he's been handed all these years, Everett hasn't received much of what you list except the staying out of trouble, treating others well and fairly, and walking humbly with whatever Supremeness he ultimately feels comfortable with.

Taxes? I'll show him someday how I do my 1040EZ, which is all he'll be doing for at least the first part of his adult life.
Bank account? He currently doesn't have one, but he will soon (see further down), and this kid who can switch out operating systems on his PC and other devices at the drop of a hat and find a plethora of fixes and programs that fix to a mind-boggling extent, ... will be a quick study. ("He will succeed at anything he chooses to do in life." - his teacher)
Keep a budget? With some help, he'll be yet again a quick study.
Fill out a job app? He's been and continues working with his teacher through a state program that helps kids, special ed or not, find good employment that suits their skills. He may soon be an intern at an apparently religiously based computer shop just down the street from where we live (http://www.loavesfishescomputers.org). He foresees a future for himself in the IT world. And he loves the GE commercials of the guy who explains what he does "working for GE" but no one seems to get it.

So, he's not aimed so badly at the moment.

Me, I guess it's because my Pop checked out on me when I was only 24 that I'm sad at the possibility I've referenced in this subject thread.
