You know, Sibyl, "drug charges" are many and varied, especially in rural
areas. The father was in a county jail, not state prison, and on
non-violent charges. The mother did lose custody some time back, but has
been clean and sober for the past 9 months and has been involved in her
daughter's life. The area is very similar to parts of the Ozarks, poor,
rural, and poorly educated, without a lot of employment.
I also looked at some of the comments beneath the article in your link. I
don't often see such nastiness even in my hometown paper in east Tennessee
(not far from where the kidnapping happened).
