I hear you about the "better that" scenario. But overgrown and well-known
to historians for local wanderings, is also good. But, alas, only if
remembered.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Memories are fading from the general population on the railroad's
presence in my home town. The spur was abandoned in 1951, but the
last train over the tracks was in the spring of 1952 for the purpose of
tearing up the tracks/timbers which they recycled. It somehow felt like
a good slap in the face to see the rails/timbers ripped out.

I enquired about getting an official State of Wisconsin Historical Marker
at the site of the local depot. The State was more than happy to do this,
but the marker had to be privately funded. (Thanks to Scott Walker,
perhaps?). The cost? $6,500.

Because there was a timber bridge over the Saint Croix River at the
MN/WI stateline, the NP restricted the size of steam locomotives that
could service the spur. As a result, the steam engine that for the large
part serviced my home town is still in existence and used for excursions.

There are several videos - Just Google U-tube for Northern Pacific
Engine 328.
