This side of the pond paper ballots is all we have. They have the 
advantage of being available if there needs to be a recount ir 
(theoretically) a challenge to a particular person'e right to vote. I 
understand that there are machines in the USA which do not have a paper 
record so an electronic malfunction cannot be corrected. As for counters 
on the back of the machine, I would hope they are not visible before the 
poll closes.
