At the risk of being completely off-base (and I certainly was with this election), I think the Republicans would have Swift-boated Bernie for being a socialist and Jewish. Had he managed to actually win the election, the Republicans would have stymied him every step of the way. He would never have gotten anything through Congress -- unless the Congress flipped to the Democrats.

Bernie would have been more of a "hold my nose" vote than Hillary was, for
whom I voted proudly and enthusiastically.  Yes, anybody but Trump, so I
would have voted for him.  But a democratic Socialist simply could not have
won in the US, despite what some pundits say.
