In the USA Midwest there is the confusion with an endemic fungal 
disease that mimics TB in the lungs:  histoplasmosis. 
 
My Aunt Helen spent a year in a regional TB sanitorium  for her  "pulmonary
TB."  She clinically improved and was discharged to discover  years
later that she had a negative skin test for TB.
 
Testing then revealed the true culprit.
