Did he pronounce his name as PAL-mer or POM-er?
 
I know that many of the "al" words in English allow pronouncing the
full value "l" but where I've been, people usually say POM-er as
in:
 
palm = Pom.
Psalm = Som
salmon = SAA-mon
balm = bom
calm = com
etc.
 
but realm has full value "l".  etc.
