Of your mercy, my mechanic's been trying, with baby step$, to solve my car's engine light mystery.  Worst case is the entire computer will need replaced (~$1000).  I really mean it that he's been trying his best to save me money, but in the end he may not be able to (other than the fact that the Kia dealership instead would probably need to throw me into debtor's prison).  What the current situation has meant is that other than the Peninsula (and even that would be a risk), my ability to drive long-distance (and by that I mean something as close as San Jose) has been painfully hampered.  Renting a car for one Stanford appointment is more than irritating.
