It may be that, stretching my memory back 63 years, I have changed the
service in my mind. Or perhaps what was done was not quite what became the
text in our 1979 prayer book. But it was outside; it was dark and cold;
and he did use a Zippo. And whatever it was, it hadn't been done under his
predecessor.
Fred Wolf was among a bunch of young clergy who came out of Seabury Western
shortly after World War II and who were determined to pursue the high
Anglo-Catholic tradition. Several of them became bishops (Wolf,
Montgomery, Hillestead, for example).
I wonder how far back Ascension (Chicago) was doing the Vigil.
