Such experiments and innovations (football coverage with no
play-by-play talk; live musicals; live episodes of normally recorded
programs like 30 Rock) are why NBC is my favorite of the big networks.
They're the ones who tried an all-news radio network, too (NIS, in the
70s). They've always seemed most willing to give a new idea a try and
just do it. The Today Show was a pioneer as well...live morning show
connected to correspondents and news sources all over the world and
presented from a hectic nerve-center type studio.
Not that coast-to-coast live is an earth-shaking innovation, but it is
odd in that it's so early for West Coast viewers. But I would bet most
SNL viewers have always assumed they're watching as it
happens...usually it's live only in Eastern and Central time zones.
Tonight it's live for everyone.
