I remember distinctly the change manifested at UW-Madison.
In 1960 the homecoming show at the UW Fieldhouse was
Vaughn Monroe and his orchestra, and the next year it was
Bop Style, and then somewhat later, it was all rock.  Big bands
were passe.  
 
But, then, by preference, I would have had the homecoming
show be "Mostly Mozart."
