So after four mostly blissful trouble-free years of eating what I wanted,
that ole debbil IBS seems to have shown up again, despite the fact that my
surgeon had told me that in *most* cases like mine, after surgery it would
not. This time I am on what is called a Low-FODMAP diet. FODMAP stands for
"*F*ermentable, *O*ligo-, *D*i-, *M*ono-saccharides *A*nd *P*olyols"
and FODMAP
restriction has been found to improve symptom control in people with irritable
bowel syndrome <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irritable_bowel_syndrome> (IBS)
and other functional gastrointestinal disorders
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Functional_gastrointestinal_disorder> (FGID).
Yippee. It's actually not as hard to follow as the gluten-free business,
which Did Not Work. Unfortunately, some of my dietary staples are no-nos at
this time. What I miss most are onions, garlic, yogurt, and bread! I'm
allowed gluten-free bread, which tastes like sawdust, and something called
sourdough spelt bread, which I have yet to find anywhere. UGH. And
vegetarian options have, for the most part, gone by the board, as beans of
all kinds are prohibited. Interestingly, I have found that one culprit
seems to be high-fructose corn syrup, which is damn near ubiquitous,
including in my beloved Heinz chili sauce! I had some of that on fries the
other night and suffered the night long...my fault for not reading the
label as it is on the "bad" list (the corn syrup, not the sauce itself).
So, Cady, I join with you on the difficult diet train.......
