I looked FROM Cologne Cathedral (512') and FROM Ulm "Cathedral"  (534')
with my two kids back in the day.  Though I am not generally afraid  of
heights, having the kids run around the towers' slippery narrow  ledges
with abandon (neither of them had the slightest fear of heights) was 
plenty nerve wracking.
 
That's the kind of thing you do when you're young.  I don't think any  of
the three of us could make it to the top of such buildings now!
 
OTOH, my ex-wife WAS afraid of heights, and on a trip to
Saint Petersburg, Russia (I wasn't along that time), found herself
in a line of tourists circumambulating the great dome of Saint  Issac's
Cathedral.  There was no turning back.  Turns out her Russian  wasn't
as good as she thought, and she missed the warning sign.
