David, I think that's probably right. My dad was I the Field Artillery branch of the Army, and I remember singing this as a kid. But caissons might not mean much to anyone anymore. 
It's similar to what they did in providing new words to the Navy Hymn, "Eternal Father..." so that there is a version that includes all of the armed forces. The original one is still there, however--and we have both versions in our hymnal.
