Starch via wheat (bread) is certainly very European.  Conquering
armies immediately burned the wheatfields of adversaries to weaken 
them.  The French, in particular, always refused to switch away from  their
heavy dependence on wheat for starch (and with their delicious
breads, who can blame them?).
 
OTOH, the Germans embraced the potato, introduced from the
new world (Peru/Bolivia) because burning the fields during
one of their endless wars didn't make any difference.  The
potatoes were safe, underground.
