It is or was also the situation in higher class families in the UK 
(assumin they were not titled). The father would be called "Mr [last 
name]" while the oldest unmarried adult daughter would be "Miss [last 
name]" The adult sons would be "Mr [first name]" and the younger 
daughters "Miss [first name]"  When the oldest daughter married the next 
oldest would switch from "Miss [first name]" to "Miss [last name]".
