Spring Conifer Thoughts:

Conifer trees have a tendency to keep green and healthy
looking through the winter, and if trouble is going to show
up, it is now, with the warmer spring days.

Last year it was our single 25' Japanese Cryptomeria
which showed several spring dead spots, but they were removed
and the tree seems now to be stronger than ever. In fact, the
tree is coning for the first time, and several branches of the
top of this tree are loaded with new small cones.

This year, sadly, it is all three of our so-called "Japanese Umbrella
Pines"(Sciadopitys verticillata), a very unusual, beautiful conifer.
They had weathered several colder winters here, so it's odd that
they would flag after this past relatively mild winter. In any case,
they were expensive, and I have the tabs. We'll see what the
nurseryman will do with this.

The species is not a real pine. I have a 30' Japanese Black
Pine (Pinus thunbergii) in the front yard that is giving the
Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) a run for the money.
