Heavens.  I haven't been following this at all, but with national politics in my blood now, I read the short article you sent and understand it all.  "Betterments"?  What did they do?  Paint the occasional kitchen?  Mow the lawns?  Putty a dent in a chancel?  (Is sarcasm.)
