[Magdalen] I need to vent...

I just don't think it was necessary for Richard's sister to set up a
situation where the relative importance of the two events would need to be
compared.
I spent my 40th birthday at the Residence Inn in Deerfield, Illinois,
working on a proposal deadline for my job. My dear partner sent me flowers
at the hotel. Still, a part of me felt bitter about my birthday coinciding
with a large deadline (I had arranged for the day off but then I was
assigned to the project). By my 50th birthday I was downplaying the day
every year to avoid further disappointment. It wasn't that I had to work on
my birthday (most years I do); it was that any plans for the celebration
that evening were blown to bits by the project and I had to have my nose to
the grindstone most of that night. I remember thinking, "That's OK; I'll
just plan on celebrating my next 40th birthday."
