The latest issue of the UW-Madison monthly alumni magazine has
a lengthy article commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Camp Randall
Football Stadium.
The original unit, built on acreage turned over to the University. Camp
Randall
had originally been a US Civil War training site. That first stadium unit
consisted of about 10,000 seats. Now, the official statistics show the
Stadium
seats 80,000, though for really big games they squeeze in 86,000.
There is a picture showing a cheer
being led by a male leader in a Rudy Vallee style white "W" sweater and
rousing
the crowd with a megaphone.
The astonishing aspect to this stadium picture taken at a football game
with
then arch rival University of Chicago (which abandoned intercollegiate
football in 1939), is that the fans are almost all male, and they nearly
all in
suit, tie, and hat (not cap).
USA customs have certainly changed with the ascension of the informal.
Who would wear a suit, tie, and hat to a college football game now?
