Oh, of course DG knew he'd been owned.  And he most definitely had been.
And rightly so.

But if he blew a lot of hot air, his bluster was understandable. After all,
it was France that donated victory to Germany at the battle of France 1940,
paving the way to Dunkirk. And while it was not the responsibility of DG
personally for the failure of the French, he had that constant need to
"show 'em".
