Remember that before World War II Jewish refugees were turned away.
Some ended up in Canada or Cuba, some managed to get to Israel,
some were returned to Europe, where they met the fate they were fleeing
from.
It wasn’t until after the war that Jewish DPs were welcomed.

So it makes perfect sense that people coming here lied about their
backgrounds.
