The ties of the German Jews to Germany were very strong, and that was one of the problems
with the Nazi's easy Jewish roundup:  The Jews couldn't really believe their beloved Germany
could do anything terrible to them.
 
While I was at the Army hospital in Frankfurt/M during the late 1960's, a dermatologist who had
been a junior faculty member at the University of Frankfurt/M returned after an escape
in 1933 and the intervening years at New York Skin & Cancer.  He had been offered the
Chair and Department Head in Dermatology.  Who would have thought he'd return after
more than 30 years?
