My 17 year old daughter, in her senior year (1995)was introduced to that 
variant of that concept by a guy she was dating whose father was a Baptist 
minister in a nearby church. He also clarified the concept of  'you can do 
almost anything' as long as you ask G_d's  forgiveness, even if it is the 
same thing over and over.  Made a huge impression on  my daughter. She 
stopped going to church permanently.
